As the depths of scrapbooking have been explored over recent years we have learned that it is much more than a simple art or craft. Scrapbooking is an honored tradition that, in one form or another, has been in existence for centuries. Modern day techniques and supplies have improved due to the wide spread education on the archival process, in addition the public demand for archival safe embellishments, used to adorn the pages of scrapbook albums.

Scrapbooking isn't something new, it is a practice that has been documented as far back as the 1700's, more than a century before the birth of photography. Throughout the pages of history scrapbooking has been labeled as "commonplace books" (1700's), "friendship albums" (1800's) and most recently, "scrapbooking".

The term "scrapbook" is derived, literally, from the words 'scrap' and 'book'. By use of scrap paper, labels, fabric swatches, calling cards, hair weaving's and other keepsakes mounted into a book, a "scrapbook" was created. However, as it is known today, scrapbooking basically sparked into a multi million dollar industry in the 1980's, starting with an international genealogy convention held in Salt Lake City, Utah, USA, in 1981.

Since this convention many people have discovered their own personal interest in scrapbooking, striking a profound growth in the tradition. People are recognizing the importance of preserving and passing down pictures, newspaper clippings & items that chronicle the history of their lives, while at the same time creating beautiful handmade albums that can be shared and enjoyed in the present which is much nicer than storing these items in harmful boxes and magnetic albums.
